Critical innovation areas for wireless technology

There have been many areas of wireless technology where innovation has brought major breakthroughs. Recent examples are the transition from analog radio interfaces (AMPS) to digital (CDMA, GSM) interfaces. These advances enabled higher capacity and more users, in addition to more cost effective and profitable business models. Several areas of wireless technology could pose significant constraints to further evolution in the use of wireless technology and wireless devices, however.
Battery capacity
As I watched my children use their mobile devices to share heir personal experiences, the constant complaint I heard throughout the day was, "my battery is about to run out". Major advances are needed in the area of battery technology, both charge density and charging capabilities.
Network Capacity

Even though major increases in capacity have been achieved through the transition from analog radio interfaces to digital, including the transition from 2G digital to 3G digital, wireless users are demanding more symmetrical network capacity, where the network uplink and downlink provide similar capacities. Today, the networks are very asymmetrical, with greater downlink than uplink capacities. The reason for this need has been brought on my devices such as the Apple iPhone and the RIM BlackBerry. These devices can create and generate large volumes of content that really only achieves its full potential when it is upload via the network to share with others.
